man armed with a knife around 7:00 last night. this was on 55th avenue in bladensburg. investigators say he refused to put the weapon down and then went after the officer. some controversial anti-see had signs -- anti-jihad signs in metro going up. metro had wanted to delay the ads. the company that produced the steroid linked to cases of meningitis has now recalled the product. in sports, the washington nationals rally late against the st. louis cardinals to win

the 14th street bridge, lanes are open, no trouble spots to report headed to the southeast- southwest freeway. lanes are open from college park headed towards 270. northbound on the gw parkway, we had construction overnight at spout run. they hope to have that open shortly. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. on-timetraffic. >> thank you. police in prince george's county are investigating an officer-involved shooting. investigators say a man armed with a knife confronted an officer, ignored repeated orders to put the weapon down and then went after the officer. the officer was not injured. the suspect is being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. fairfax county police continue to look for clues into an apparent homicide in alexandria. 30-year-old mark ives was found dead outside a home early sunday in the 5400 block of broadmoor street. investigators believe he was assaulted by someone he knew. police are currently looking

for that person. a controversial ad that sparked concern for metro will be going up at several d.c. metro stops today. a federal judge made the ruling over the weekend. >> the signs have already set off protests in the new york subways. fox 5's melanie alnwick is live at the u street station with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. this is one of the stations where one. those ads will go up at some time today. we don't know exactly what time these ads are going to go up and they aren't expected to be particularly visible, just one ad in each of four stations throughout metro's pretty expansive subway system so metro police say they are ready in case anyone decides to protest them. the ads paid for bit american freedom defense initiative say, quote, in any war between civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. support israel. defeat jihad. many say these are offensive because they equate muslims

with savages. metro wanted to delay displaying the ads until the protest in the middle east subsided. >> it is not right to generalize that jihad terrorists and generalize the muslims. >> they should be allowed on free speech grounds but i think it is incredibly irresponsible. >> it is kind of a big thing to call somebody a savage but this is america, freedom of speech. >> reporter: a woman was arrested in new york last month after she tried to deface one of the srican freedom defense initiative also won a court fight there to display the ads in the new york city subway system. we understand that the ads will be going up here at the u street station as well as glenmont, tacoma and also georgia avenue. we do know they have to be post

meanwhile, mitt romney is back in the battleground state of virginia today. he will deliver a speech on foreign policy at the virginia military institute in lexington. now, get ready for a month full of debates. this thursday, vice president joe biden and congressman paul ryan will face off in their first and only debate before the election. then next tuesday, the 16th, president obama and mitt romney will meet for their second debate. and the third and final presidential debate takes places monday, october 22nd. the virginia senate race takes the spot height tonight as tim kaine and george allow pressure face off in richmond. the race between the two former governors has been close since the start but a new poll shows kaine pulling way a little bit with 52% support and allen with 45%. 45%. police catch a break in their search for find a missing girl. that is topping national

the war in afghanistan begins its 12th -- began its 12th year yesterday in a country that still remains deeply divided and dangerous. u.s. troops invaded the country on october 7th, 2001 more than a month after the taliban led the september 11th terrorist attacks. all foreign troops scheduled to leave afghanistan by 2014, the same year the afghan people are expected to vote for a new president. more than 2,000 u.s. troops have been killed since the beginning of the war. in colorado, police have expanded their search for a missing 10-year-old girl. they say a backpack found in

♪ it officially feels like fall here in the d.c. area. for some residents in minnesota, fall means hitting the slopes. skiers and snowboarders taxed the snow on one area ski slope.

it is the earliest opening ever for the ski resort, just two weeks after the water slides were open there. two feet of snow was made for -- after temperatures fell below freezing on the mountain. >> that is early for there. but look at that. oh, my gosh. we knew they were going to get hit with the cold temperatures. we definitely have cold temperatures here, gwen. nothing like that though, i don't think. >> we don't even want to think about that. >> it would be cool to drive in there, do that and get away from it. get away from it after you're done. that would be cool. >> today, it will be cool as well. we had cool conditions yesterday across the area. the week is starting out cooler but then we're going to see a bit of a warm-up as we head through into midweek. at least, we've got a little bit for everybody. not all bad overall at all. we are looking at temperatures that are going to be well below the seasonal average for the day.

here is a look at yesterday's highs. wait until i tell you the difference of where we should be. 56degrees we hit at reagan national airport yesterday. 52 at dulles. 55 at bwi thurgood marshall. these temperatures are 17 to 19 degrees below the seasonal average. that is a pretty good indication. we had hit 80 degrees into the end of the week on friday so unbelievable. it is currently 46 at d.c. 42 at baltimore. only 37 at gaithersburg this morning. 37 at frederick. 40 at hagerstown. 37 at martinsburg. 44 at fredericksburg. the cooler air is definitely intact. across the west, we've got frost warnings and freeze advisories for the areas shaded here. so this is until 9:00 this morning where temperatures are going to be in some areas below the freezing mark and into the low to mid-30s. really chilly across areas of

our west. satellite-radar composite showing you we've got some clouds streaming in. this will move its way up to the east. we'll be left with showers and rain into the course of this afternoon and into the evening. in the meantime, mainly cloudy skies. a little bit of fog out there to deal with. that will be out of the way soon. the wet weather is expected to kick in and the cooler conditions are not going anywhere for today. we are still looking at a pretty chilly day. so by this afternoon, about midday, increasing clouds. i can't rule out maybe a stinkle or two especially to areas to the south by the time we hit the midday hour. by 5:00, we are set up for a chance of some showers. we are looking at a daytime high of about 56 degrees. here is a look at your fox 5 accu-weather seven-day forecast. some of that wet weather lingering into the early hours of tuesday and then bit afternoon, partly sunny skies. we start to warm up a little bit into the course of the week even hitting almost the mid-70s by hump day and then sunshine through to the end of the week.
